In all ages and human times ever since our erect and restless species appeared upon the planet, men have been living with others of their kind in something called societies. Before the emergence of sociology, the study of society was carried on in an unscientific manner and society had never been the central concern of any science. It is through the study of sociology that the truly scientific study of society has been possible. Sociology alone studies social relationships, society itself. Sociology is interested in social relationships not because they are economic or political or religious or legal but because they are at the same time social. Sociology studies how the relations combine, how they build up smaller or greater systems, and how they respond to changes and changing needs or demands. Therefore the study of sociology is essentially analytical.
Sociology is the study of society. It tries to understand creatively how different social institutions and practices are related to each other. To be put simply, sociology tells us about why people live the way they live. It looks at the interconnectedness between the social behaviour of people and the cultural context they come from. Human life is not segregated into exclusive spheres. All these forces push and pull at each other in varying degrees and ways. The popularity of Sociology as a discipline arises primarily from its outlook towards society and social relationships as a whole, rather than in fragments.
Sociology, because of its bearing upon many of the problems of the present world, has assumed such great importance that it is considered to be the best approach to all the social sciences. Giddings has rightly pointed out, 'Sociology tells us how to become what we want to be.'
Sociology improves our understanding of society and increases the power of social action. Knowledge of society, social groups, social institutions, etc. helps us to lead an effective social life. ... It examines the relationship between individuals and society, the impact of society on man, and other matters.
Sociology studies society in a scientific way
Before the emergence of sociology, there was no systematic and scientific attempt to study human society with all its complexities. Sociology has made it possible to study society scientifically. This scientific knowledge about human society is needed to achieve progress in various fields.
Sociology is one of the most sought-after courses in all national and international universities of repute. It has remained among the most preferred courses among students and future employers alike.

Why Should I Study Sociology?
Because sociology is about you and the world you live in. It is the scientific study of people and their activities, their work, their games, relationships, crimes, beliefs, organizations, problems and dreams. More than just a course of study, sociology is a way of thinking; a philosophy of life that not only examines how things exist, but also asks why things exist the way they do, and what can be done to make things better.
-
What skills can I develop?
Firstly, you obtain a broad education in such areas as social inequality, race and ethnic conflict, crime and delinquency, social policy and social change, social work and counselling, global environmental problems, the sociology of family and gender, drugs and society, and the sociology of the Third World, among others. Through "hands-on" experience (in-class projects and the required senior internship/practicum), you also acquire skills in social research and statistical analysis, in addition to computer literacy, as preparation for careers in government, industry, social services and social change organizations as well as academia.
-
What kind of future can I anticipate with this course?
Because of your broad educational grounding and your competency in obtaining, organizing, and evaluating data, a B.A. in sociology opens up countless doors in our increasingly information-oriented society.
