Understanding the Changing Landscape

The seminar started with a discussion about various landscape design trends in the age of AI. AI technologies are playing an increasing role in modern design practices, starting from idea incubation through production. Mr. Sunil Kumar, the Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, underscored the need to balance between the human-centric and AI techniques addressing the aspect of designing.

Diverse Perspectives on Design Education

One of the most salient features of the seminar was the many different ways of looking at the situation through the eyes of the panelists. Prof. Jesvin Yeo of NTU, Singapore, enlightened the audience on the conjunction of cultural heritage and design. He challenged the viewers to participate in a holistic approach that involves the local communities' culture, heritage, and the essence of human life. Prof. Praveen Nahar, NID Ahmedabad Director, referred to the fact that sustainable and responsible design should be the cornerstone of the AI revolution.

Exploring Innovative Design Practices

Visitors were part of an AI show where practices of the popular designers were present. Prof. Ina Conradi from NTU, Singapore, discussed her latest research on the contribution that AI makes to the development of new media art. To this end, she has shown how AI technology effectively pushes the traditional frontiers of creativeness and expression. Parag Trivedi, Director, User Experience at Microsoft gave his views on the development of generative AI-based experiences, suggesting designers have an important role in inventing humanized products and services.

Insights for Design Education

Along the discussion process, it is evident that design education has to be restructured to meet the challenges of the post-AI world. Prof. Uday Dandavate, a design activist and co-founder of SonicRim, stressed the need for making the technologies more humanistic and design practices that would lead to inclusion. Gaurav Mathur, Head of Design of Flipkart, mentioned that student designers should be taught practical skills and gain an in-depth knowledge of target users through design education programs.
